Professional Notice

Koury Lopes Advogados (KLA) was established in São Paulo in 2002 by a group of highly qualified partners and associates from Brazil’s leading law firms who decided to join efforts in an innovative project with a new philosophy of rendering legal services.

The firm grew by adding other lawyers, including ex-partners of leading firms. At the end of 2006, KLA established a representative office in Houston, US, in order to have a base near its international oil and gas, and energy clients. With a permanent resident partner, the Houston representative office works in close collaboration with the KLA attorneys and of counsel experts in oil and gas, energy, and environmental law.

KLA currently has over 120 professionals, most of them with an international academic and professional background and more than 10 years of experience.

The firm offers a broad range of services, advising and representing Brazilian and foreign clients. The firm aims to provide its clients with high quality, prompt and efficient services, as required by the time-sensitive global economy. KLA’s philosophy is to render complete and differentiated services in the main areas of law, with direct involvement in clients’ activities, through a constant, dynamic and continuous partnership. The partner in charge of a particular client will be permanently dedicated and responsible for its affairs, combining expertise with a deep understanding of the commercial environment that involves the client’s business.

KLA advises and represents a broad range of international clients operating in Brazil and some of the most important Brazilian companies in their local and international dealings. The firm also conducts large-scale litigation and arbitration procedures.

The firm’s international client base includes industrial, automotive, pharmaceutical, insurance, banking, consumer products, broadcasting, entertainment, oil and gas, energy, aviation and advertising companies. The firm also represents international private equity funds investing in Brazil.

KLA currently represents international clients from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

KLA attorneys are at least bilingual, and have extensive expertise in drafting, negotiating, and finalising documents in English. Of KLA’s 22 partners, 12 have LLM degrees from international universities (seven in the US, three in the UK, one in Spain and one in France), nine have worked for major international law firms (in New York, London, Paris, Buenos Aires and Hong Kong), and four are admitted to the New York Bar. Several the firm’s 100-plus supporting legal staff also attended LLM or similar courses in international universities, in addition to their Brazilian law studies.

Languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
