Professional Notice

Haynes and Boone is one of the largest and most active US law firms operating in Mexico, serving a growing list of international and Mexican clients. Its fully bilingual and bicultural Mexico City office has legal professionals licensed in Mexico, the US, and South America, and trained in both civil and common-law legal systems. The Mexico City office is fully integrated with all other offices of the firm from both a management and technological perspective, consistent with the firm’s commitment to teamwork and client service.

Haynes and Boone’s Mexico City office has experience in a wide variety of business sectors, including finance, real estate, energy, transportation, mining and manufacturing. Our legal professionals are highly experienced in cross-border and domestic transactions in various practice areas, including corporate and capital markets, banking and finance, real estate, energy, tax, bankruptcy, and arbitration and litigation.

Attorneys in the Mexico City office have participated in historic projects, including advising the Mexican government in the politically sensitive privatisation of down stream natural gas assets in the 1990s and serving as Mexican counsel for Mexico’s Bank Advisory Group during the Mexican debt restructuring in the 1980s and early 1990s. In 2007, the firm advised Mexican issuers in the sale of over US$2 billion in publicly traded debt and equities and separately advised one of the bidders in the takeover bid for Aeromexico. Recently, the Mexico City office has been very active in the energy sector (natural gas, E&P, and wind power), real estate (particularly for Hyatt International, Inc), and capital markets (particularly for AT&T). The Mexico City office also recently represented the winning bidder in a CFE bid for the construction and operation of a gas pipeline for the state of Chihuahua. The Mexico City office is also very active in the aviation area, recently representing American Airlines, IATA and Amadeus in the Mexicana bankruptcy. Attorneys in the Mexico City office have also been very active in the Mexican capital markets and banking sector over the years (represented Bank of America in its 2003 acquisition of a 24.9 per cent equity stake in Grupo Financiero Santander Serfin and in 2010 in the sale by the same percentage to Grupo Financiero Santander for US$2.5 billion dollars).

The Mexico City office is an integral part of the firm’s Americas practice group, consisting of approximately 50 lawyers from throughout the Americas, with attorneys in the practice group based in New York, Dallas, Houston, and Washington, DC. Mexico City attorneys regularly participate in projects throughout Latin America and the Caribbean and coordinate complex projects in these jurisdictions on behalf of their multinational clients. Mexico City associates regularly work and train in the US offices of the firm, providing an excellent comparative law experience.
