Market focus in Latin Lawyer June 2009

This is a time of deep uncertainty for Chile, its companies and its law firms.

On the one hand, the country's economy is slowing rapidly - in large part thanks to its connectedness to the global economy. In a year, imports have fallen by 42 per cent and exports by 33 per cent. Prices for copper, Chile's leading export, have tumbled, while separately the country's salmon farming industry has been ravaged by a virus. This month the Central Bank predicted the economy could contract by 3 per cent in the second quarter, formally entering recession.
