Michell specializes in structured and project finance, securitization, restructuring and M&A.

Michell has more than 30 years’ experience as an attorney. He advises clients on complex structured finance and securitizations. He is also an expert in project financing and has been extensively involved in the development of the PPS regime  (equivalent to the UK PPP model). He has also spearheaded groundbreaking financial structures in the real estate sector, including the largest real estate financing ever in Mexico and the creation of the first Mexican land bank.

Michell’s restructuring practice covers debt and corporate restructurings and concurso mercantil proceedings (equivalent to US Chapter 11). He has represented bank syndicates in some of the largest debt restructurings in Mexico and has particular expertise in US-Mexico cross-border cases. He advised the U.S. Department of the Treasury on the US$20 billion emergency financial package provided to the Mexican Government.

Michell has strong experience in M&A transactions. He has represented foreign investors in major acquisitions of Mexican assets, including the acquisition of Aseguradora Hidalgo by MetLife for almost US$1 billion.

 

Michell has been involved in high-level trade negotiations. He advised the US Commerce Department in the negotiation of the investment and financial services chapters of NAFTA and served as Mexico Delegate in a UNCINTRAL session on international bills of exchange and promissory notes.

Michell has lectured in Corporate Law, Commercial Law and Comparative Law at the Universidad Iberoamericana. He received his LL.M. in Comparative Law from Georgetown University, having graduated as an attorney (summa cum laude) from Universidad Iberoamericana.
